How to edit an SVG file online

VectorCraft opens an SVG as editable artwork: paths, shapes, groups, gradients and live text, not a flat picture. Change what you need with Illustrator-style tools, then export a clean SVG. It all happens in your browser, so the file stays on your computer.

Open the SVG

  1. Open the editor. The first visit downloads the app; later visits open from cache.
  2. Use File › Open… and pick your .svg or .svgz file, or drag it onto the window. Dropped on an open document’s canvas, it is placed there as one group; dropped anywhere else, it opens as its own document.
  3. The artboard takes the SVG’s size. One CSS pixel becomes one point, and a file sized in millimetres keeps its physical size.

If the SVG code is on your clipboard (copied from a code editor or a website’s icon library), click the canvas and paste with Ctrl+V or ⌘V. VectorCraft pastes SVG markup as artwork.

How do you change colours?

How do you reshape paths?

Can you edit the text in an SVG?

Yes. <text> elements come in as live type, with their font size, spacing and paths for type on a path, so the Type tool (T) can change the words. If the font isn’t available in the browser, choose another in the Character panel. Text that a design tool converted to outlines is paths, not type, and is edited like any other shape.

Export a clean SVG

  1. Choose File › Export › Export As SVG…. The SVG Options dialog opens.
  2. Pick how styling is written, the number of Decimal places, and whether to Minify the code or make it Responsive. For text, Font can keep SVG text or convert it to outlines.
  3. Show Code previews the markup before you save. The file arrives as a browser download.

To keep editing later, also save the document with File › Save. Preserve Editing Capabilities in SVG Options stores the full VectorCraft document inside the SVG so it reopens fully editable.

What doesn’t come through?

VectorCraft reads the drawing, not the behaviour. Scripts, animation and interactivity are dropped. Filters that are a blur, drop shadow, glow or feather become live effects; other filters are left out with a warning. Raster images the SVG links to by file name can’t be found from a browser tab, so embed them in the SVG first.

The AI SVG generator on this site writes SVG icons, logo marks and illustrations from a description, using your own API key, and can revise an SVG you export from VectorCraft. To turn a PNG or JPEG into SVG instead, see how to convert an image to vector.
